Dr Mumbo

Is this the biggest year in advertising for bananas?

Has anyone noticed the amount of attention bananas have received lately? Yes, that’s right bananas, the fruit that you eat.

First, Horticulture Australia got all up in arms about what it thought was a misrepresentation of the humble fruit in a Wrigley’s Extra chewing gum ad.

The industry body felt so strongly about it that it took the complaint to the Advertising Standards Bureau. It has also called on “banana allies to boycott chewing gum”.

Now, Westpac has also turned to the fruit as a way of explaining why it’s raised its interest rates across its variable mortgage rates. According to an animated video in an email sent to customers, “once upon a time” there was a big, bad storm that damaged the crops and pushed the price of bananas up. That in turn saw the price of a banana smoothie go up by 50 cents.

So, now do you get why Westpac raised its rates?

And just when Dr Mumbo thought there could be no more banana references, in popped a press release from sunscreen brand Banana Boat. Of course it did!

In case you were wondering, the brand is hoping to get in the Guinness World Record by attempting to break the record of building the most sandcastles in one hour. It’s inviting the public to join in, billing it as a fun event for all the family.

But Dr Mumbo has only one question – will there be any bananas?
