Is Youtube social media? Just Google it

As Dr Mumbo’s readers would be aware, the rapidly disintegrating relationship between Youtube and the government has reached a new nadir with the tech giant threatening legal action over plans to include it in the forthcoming new age limits.

This week’s definitive statement on Youtube from a Google spokesperson: “It is not social media.”

Still, there’s no harm in getting a second opinion. So Dr Mumbo turned to the content theft engine du jour, Google’s AI Overview.

AI Overview crawls the web for the most credible information, and synthesises it for users, all without the hassle of them needing to do anything so boringly monetising as clicking on the sources of information.

And what’s the authoritative answer when a user asks the question “Is Youtube a form of social media”?

It’s pretty specific: “Yes, Youtube is generally considered a form of social media.”

And then the AI Overview offers up comprehensive explanations for exactly why that is the case.

The Overview ends with the similarly definitive conclusion: “While some argue that YouTube’s primary function is video sharing, its social features are undeniable, leading to its widespread classification as a social media platform.”

Undeniable indeed.
