James Cameron and wife star in Tourism New Zealand campaign

Tourism New Zealand has convinced Oscar-winning director and occasional explorer James Cameron to tell the world why he considers the Land of the Long White Cloud his second home.

The the filmmaker’s wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, also makes an appearance in the video, which was created by Whybin\TBWA in Sydney and its PR agency Eleven.

The film, shot in a series of lush and spectacular locations that have become the benchmark of campaigns for the country, features Cameron talking about what inspired him as a boy and how his life became a journey of discovery.

Cameron concludes by stating that discovery is fuelled by curiosity, “the most powerful thing you own”, as the film concludes with the couple standing on top of a spectacular mountain overlooking a lake.

Cameron has been living in New Zealand for four years as he works on the next Avatar film and said that he wanted to show off the country to the world.

“I came as a stranger – I knew very little about New Zealand, and I left in love with it,” Cameron said.

“Not just the beauty of the land that is very seductive, but the dynamic spirit of the people. I had never felt a connection to a place that strongly before. And I never really lost that dream. If you enjoy the outdoors and you enjoy a sense of adventure, you’re not going to be able to beat this place anywhere in the world.

“If you happen to like helicopters, like I do, you could see ten of the most stunning places you’ll see in your lifetime in a day. If you are driving, an hour-and-a-half or two hours, the country just unrolls toward you like an IMAX film.”

Tourism New Zealand chief executive, Kevin Bowler, said getting Cameron as an advocate was a huge honour.

“Having someone the calibre of James Cameron sharing his personal stories and insights while exploring some of New Zealand’s most beautiful places is of immeasurable valuable for New Zealand,” Bowler said.

“James and Suzy have chosen to have a home in New Zealand and continue to be inspired by our beautiful landscapes and welcoming, creative people. I am sure that this video, which perfectly captures James’s passion for exploration and his curiosity, will inspire many more people to travel to New Zealand and discover it for themselves.”
