JC Decaux promotes Essie Wake to new chief marketing officer role

JC Decaux has appointed Essie Wake as its first Chief Marketing Officer for its Australian operations, after six years with the outdoor advertising company.

Wake, who previously worked at Initiative, joined the company in 2011 as marketing director and takes the role after JC Decaux appointed Max Eburne as the first local Chief Operating Officer last year.

Wake will be the outdoor company’s first chief marketing officer.

In her time with JC Decaux, Wake has assisted the company with its digital transformation, through the company’s partnership with Data Republic, the establishment of the Pigeon Project, the launch of Orbit and the launch of Digital Citylights last year.

Commenting on her promotion, Chief Executive Steve O’Connor said Wake has made an “invaluable contribution” to the company’s growth.

“Initially charged with leading trade marketing activities, Essie’s capabilities and tireless commitment warranted her promotion to our local management board. Her good counsel and general business acumen has been instrumental in her role as a board member.

“As we enter ‘JCDecaux 3.0’, Essie’s qualities will help steer the business in a broader marketing sense.

“Essie has moved well beyond her initial remit, and the new CMO role recognises that, and more importantly acknowledges the increasingly important role that marketing, and all that it now encompasses, will aid in the growth of the company over the coming period.  I cannot think of anyone more competent than Essie to take on this critical responsibility.”

Wake added: “It’s commitment to innovation and design, as well as the investment in digital and data capabilities to offer advertisers in-depth, dynamic knowledge about our audience, makes it an exciting time to lead marketing as we enter a new era of growth with much more to come.”

Her appointment, which is effective immediately, follows the promotion of Max Eburne to the newly-created role of chief commercial officer late last year.

JC Decaux currently holds the 20 year City of Sydney outdoor advertising contract, which is set to expire in 2018.
