Job cuts at key Clemenger Group agencies

Clemenger Group agencies CHEP Network and Clemenger BBDO Australia have made a number of roles redundant, Mumbrella can reveal.

The exact number of roles is unconfirmed, however it is understood to be in the double-digits at CHEP Network in Sydney, and approximately seven at Clemennger BBDO.

It is understood the changes to staffing are largely owed to restructuring and a shift in requirements, a trend that has seen several other creative agencies make cuts in recent months.

At the end of 2022, there were reports of losses across agencies including Ogilvy, M&C Saatchi, Cummins&Partners, AJF Partnership, The Royals, WPP at a group level, and more as businesses looked to get in shape for a challenging year ahead.

This year has also seen new leadership at both of Clemenger Group’s flagship agencies, with Dani Bassil arriving in January to the new national Clemenger BBDO agency, while Lee Leggett recently replaced Justin Hind at CHEP.

A CHEP Network spokesperson told Mumbrella: “CHEP can confirm that a number of roles were recently made redundant across the business. Out of respect for those involved, we have no further comment to make.”

A spokesperson for Clemenger BBDO Australia also told Mumbrella: “Clemenger BBDO Australia can confirm that a small number of its senior team have chosen to leave the agency.

“Their decision to depart is personal, and with respect for their confidentiality, the agency will not comment on their departures at this stage.”

There is no further information at this stage regarding which senior figures have left the agency.

Clemenger BBDO’s headcount currently sits at 257, as per its LinkedIn, while CHEP Network’s is currently listed at 386.

Clemenger Group continues to be 26.33% employee-owned, with approximately 350 employees across Australia and New Zealand holding shares in the company, according to its website.

The remaining 73.67% is owned by BBDO Worldwide, part of Omnicom Group. A $150 million takeover bid was approved by shareholders in 2011, making BBDO the majority owner.
