Junkee Media launches its first video festival ‘Video Junkee 2017’

Junkee Media has launched its first video festival ‘Video Junkee 2017’ headlined by Orange is the New Black star Yael Stone.

Announced at this year’s Junkee Media upfronts, Video Junkee is a new film festival celebrating and showcasing creativity and innovation in video.

Stone plays Lorna Morello in the Netflix original series.

“Let’s have a conversation about the stories we tell, why we tell them and what possible impact they can have in the real world? Where the attention deficit media cycle is set to dangerously fast timer, what can stories actually do for our global consciousness?” Stone said in a statement.

Foxtel, YouTube Red, Netflix, BuzzFeed and ABC iview have partnered with the event to bring attendees an array of content including  a series of masterclasses, talks, screenings and awards.

Ooh Media – which bought Junkee in June last year – is another major sponsor, supporting the festival with out-of-home campaigns.

In partnership with Destination NSW, the festival will showcase video content from a range of platforms such as SVOD, social, live streaming, TV, film and branded entertainment.

The festival has been co-curated by SBS Viceland’s anchor, interviewer and producer Marc Fennell and executive producer at Junkee Media Henry Kalaf.

“This is the golden age of video. We consume video now more than ever. It’s the perfect time to bring a festival like this together.

“Not only to celebrate the great work by creators, streamers and broadcasters but also to make sense of the new frontier – what is the next blockbuster in live video or VR going to look like? Who is the Spielberg of social video? This is the perfect event to find that talent,” Fennel said in a statement.

Niel Ackland, Junkee Media CEO, said: “With the explosion of new content and the many new ways of discovering and watching from mobile phones to the big screen we really believe this is the right time for us to launch the Video Junkee Festival and online platform to harness this new national obsession.”

Video Junkee 2017 will be held at Sydney’s Carriageworks on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 July with multi-pass tickets available from $89.

General admission tickets go on sale on June 15 and range between $12 and $39.
