Strategic fashion: Todd Sampson style vs Claudia Karvan dressing
It seems that not all advertising and marketing people take their style cues from Todd Sampson, if today’s Live Pitch session at Mumbrella360 is anything to go by.
While Mike Barry, White Agency creative director, does look to Sampson for fashion advice, fellow Live Pitch competitor Hill + Knowlton Strategies digital practice lead Ben Shipley went more strategic with his fashion choices.
“I hope I’m dressed alright, I thought we were supposed to come dressed as Todd Sampson,” said Barry at the beginning of his pitch.
“I didn’t get the memo about dressing like Todd, but I’ve chosen to dress like Claudia instead,” Shipley quipped as he took the stage. Karvan, one of the judging panel for the Live Pitch, was also wearing a stripey top.
The strategy didn’t pay off with the judges, and the audience, voting in favour of RAPP Australia’s pitch of creating a sequel to the Chinese film Lost in Thailand, a Hangover style film which saw Chinese tourism to Thailand increase.
Responding to a brief to leverage Screen Australia’s film and TV assets to promote Australia to US and UK tourists, RAPP Australia challenged the brief suggesting China was the market of choice, a challenge that paid off.
Sorry, but I need to call bullshit on Rapp’s pitch. i’m all for challenging a brief, but if I was Screen Australia, I’d be feeling completely patronised by a couple of data geeks telling me that my target audience was completely wrong. Wow! China? Really?! Amazing!
Not to mention, their insights being built upon incorrect data assumptions, and the creative being an inherently unoriginal “sequel” with dubious ROI potential.
Did love their mash-up video demo at the end though!
