Lowy Institute to award international journalism
The Lowy Institute for International Policy has announced an annual media award for journalism that has deepened the knowledge or shaped the discussion of international policy issues in Australia over the last year. The award will be presented to an individual journalist or journalism team at a ceremony in September.

The Lowy Institute for International Policy today announced the establishment of an annual Lowy Institute Media Award. The Award will be presented to an Australian journalist (or journalistic team) in print, broadcast or on-line media, who through a single piece of reporting or commentary, or series of reports, has deepened the knowledge or shaped the discussion of international policy issues in Australia in the last year.
‘The rise of Asia means that Australia finds itself a lot closer to the centre of geopolitical and economic action than in the past. It is vital to the national interest, therefore, that Australians understand what is happening beyond our shores, and the media play a central role in this regard.
In the same way that it is important for Australia to have a voice in world affairs, it is important to have Australian eyes upon the world,” said Lowy Institute Executive Director Michael Fullilove.
The award will be decided by a panel of eminent judges, including award-winning journalists Jana Wendt and Max Uechtritz, as well as Australia’s longest-serving Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer. Lowy Institute Board Director Mark Ryan and Lowy Institute Executive Director Michael Fullilove will also sit on the judging panel.
Finalists will be selected on the basis of the topicality of their reporting, its originality and influence on public debate, as well as the quality of written work or broadcast. A cash prize of $5,000 and return airline travel to Asia (valued up to $6,000) will be awarded to the winner at a ceremony in September 2013.
