Masterchef profits from budget dodgers as ABC sees declining interest in Treasurer’s speech

joe hockey budget 2015Budget coverage avoidance proved a boon for Masterchef on Channel Ten last night which saw its audience rise to 1.212m viewers at 7.30pm, just below its launch figures a week prior.

The cooking contest dominated its primetime reality rivals once again, with Nine’s Reno Rumble getting 718,000 viewers from 7.30pm and Seven’s House Rules just 675,000 for its 80-minute run. Both were well down on last week’s debut when they were simulcast across the multichannels.

Similarly the main ABC coverage also saw a decline with 733,000 viewers for the Treasurer’s speech at 7.30pm – after getting 967,000 last year, with 600,000 hanging on to watch Leigh Sales’ grilling of Joe Hockey and analysis in a news special from 8pm-9pm. Last year that was watched by 947,000.

ABC News 24 pulled a higher than average audience share of 2.4 per cent on the back of its coverage, although last year it managed a 3.2 per cent share for its coverage.

Love Child on Nine at 8.40pm also dropped after its simulcast debut last week, although with 817,000 (down from 920,000 last week) viewers it was the highest rating non-news or reality show of the evening.

NCIS on Ten after MAsterchef also lifted slightly with 727,000 viewers compared to 707,000 last week, helping the channel to outrate Seven again, with 19.4 per cent to 15.5 per cent.

Seven’s performance was hit by a big drop off for Ramsay’s Costa Del Nightmares at 8.50pm which had 494,000 viewers, from 511,000 last week.

Nine just topped the night with 19.6 per cent, as its new bulletins at 6pm (1.079m) and 6.30pm (1.061m) performed well. Seven News at 6pm had 1.079m, dropping to 989,000 for the combined news and Today tonight offering at 6.30pm.
