Matty Johns notches up first win against Nine’s Footy Show
The first episode of Seven’s new rugby league program, The Matty Johns Show, was the resounding ratings winner against Nine rival The Footy Show last night.
Johns, who was previously part of The Footy Show team, saw his show premier in Sydney and Brisbane with a combined audience of 595,000, according to preliminary overnight OzTam data in the main metro markets.
This was well ahead of The Footy Show which had 266,000 viewers in its 9:30pm time slot.
The Matty Johns Show was broadcast two hours earlier at 7:30pm and was the most-watched show in Sydney and came in sixth place in Brisbane.
How can you even compare the two programs? Firstly, Seven’s is on at 7.30pm, while Nine shows it at 9.30. And secondly, Seven’s goes for 60 minutes, while Nine’s goes for almost 120minutes through to 11.30. There are too many different variables for a clear comparison. The Matty Jones Show was always going to do better simply because it was only earlier and for a shorter period of time.
Agreed that it’s hard to compare the two, but good on Matty Johns for sticking it up to Channel 9 after the lynching they gave him last year.
The Matty Johns show may have performed well for the first episode, and given the amount of pre-promotion by Seven, so it should have. BUT, I am surprised nobody has yet placed their bets on how long it will be around for?
It was always going to do better?? Not everything works better at 7:30. And I think blind freddy can tell it’s going after the same audience as The Footy Show (who Seven are hoping get their fix of footy and forget about Nine’s show later on in the night). True the length of the show will effect the ratings but the ratings difference is huge and you can’t really ignore that.
The Matty Johns show needs someone to steer it better than Matt can. At least the skits wern’t offensive and there were no men in dresses which is a huge change for a football show!
with numbers like that i think it shouls be around for a while. wasn’t my cup of tea but i am no judge i’ve never seen anything in 2.5men but look how many people do.
anyway, apples and oranges or not. Matty john rated well in it’s timeslot. The footy show didn’t. if the ratings stay strong (and it can lose a lot of that premier and still be strong) this could be the year something finally happens over at 9. they can’t use the excuse that there is less audience for a NRL variety show compared with AFL, it looks like there is. TFS rates badly because it’s crap.

We do have to take into account that the two shows ran in different time slots and different lengths of time – which is why article makes the like-for-like comprison of The Matty Johns show against others in the 7:30pm time slot win, as well as the ratings comparison with The Footy Show which targets the SAME audience… something media buyers would take into account.

what a shocker of a show – not funny, not engaging. and what the hell was with the wall paper? The set looke dlike it came from home beautiful!
The NRL should enjoy the fact that this show is on so early in the night. It allows targeting and promotion of their code to the younger demos. Nine should also be happy that Seven are promoting the league for them…Never new 7 to be soooo generous!
In terms of ratings comparisons It might be best to do a share comparison being in 2 different timeslots against varying demos. This may give a better indication of performance.
Remember too that Leckie did say he could promote the shit out of anything, even Cougar Town. If this show performs the same, then they will lose 35% audience within weeks. Will it be attractive to buyers then.
The other problem it will face is the timeslot does not allow for certain types of advertising that target the heavily male skewed topic….No alcohol money for this show….Maybe KFC will get onboard.
Will watch with interest on all of the above…….
For a show that was supposed to have had the shit promoted out of it, there was an awful lot of shit left in…

How deceitful are the alleged viewing numbers and audience share statistics. It would appear that not 1 person watches Pay TV…not 1. No mention of any TV channel or show which airs on pay TV and yet nearly everyone I know in the metro area has Pay TV in their home. I watched Sky News & then tuned in to the Matty Johns show, but how was I counted. How could any clear minded person put any credence into those figures or results….And who, except for Television Executives really care. For what is was worth, I got a few laughs and will watch it again.

Huh? I & many of my family & friends don’t have Pay pay pay TV.
I don’t have anything to gain from (alleged) sexual abusers like Matt circle jerk Johns and the Willy the rapist Mason so I’m not watching them either. The show sounds like crap anyway.
would be interesting to see information on viewers … especially female viewers.
Everyone I spoke to who watched the show thought it was rubbish. I think you’ll find next weeks numbers drop dramatically, as most viewers just wanted to see if he’d do the Reg Regan skit again.
Matty should go back to playing football, TV/attempted comedy or whatever you want to call it is terrible!
