Melissa Matheson named editor of Nova’s youth website Goat

Nova Entertainment has appointed former mX Sydney editor Melissa Matheson as the editor of youth website Goat.

Matheson, who was most recently digital content director and contributors manager at ARN, took the helm of Goat this October, where she manages writers, video producers and freelancers for the website.

Matheson is the first editor of the mobile-first website

Matheson has spent a significant chunk of her career at News Corp, working across The Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph in addition to mX Sydney. She also spent a brief period at SBS as a senior editor.

At the same time, acting editor of Goat, Caitlin Welsh, has been appointed deputy editor.

Nova’s chief digital officer, Fayad Tohme, welcomed Matheson to the team.

“Goat has a unique voice and we were looking for a creative thinker and inspiring leader,” he said.

“We are excited to welcome Melissa on board to lead Goat’s writers and video producers, in creating content that speaks to our younger audiences and sparks a conversation around news, entertainment and life. Melissa will also be working closely with our commercial team on creating a fresh take on native content and brand integration.”

Matheson’s appointment comes eight months after Nova launched the mobile-only platform for millennials. The youth site, which was announced in March, is Nova’s biggest investment in a digital product to date. Outside of Goat, Nova Entertainment runs radio networks Nova FM and Smooth FM.

Upon launch, Nova CEO, Cathy O’Connor, told Mumbrella the website was part of a broadening of distribution points for the business.

“We know that we have brands – Nova and the lower part of Smooth – that do resonate with this audience. What we do see though is although we have a lot of them, they are starting to interact differently, so spending a bit less time with the radio and a bit more time on digital platforms,” she said.
