Mentally Healthy COVID-19 survey launches to measure pandemic’s mental health impact

Never Not Creative, UnLtd and Everymind have launched a Mentally Healthy COVID-19 survey, a follow up to the Mentally Healthy 2020 survey that will specifically zoom in on how the pandemic has impacted the industry’s mental health and wellbeing.

The five-minute ‘pulse study’ will compare the stress, depression, and anxiety levels of the industry before and during the COVID-19 related lockdown conditions, the economic impacts of which have led to widespread redundancies, stand downs, and pay cuts across the industry.

“The COVID-19 restrictions have had a major impact on the mental wellbeing of people working in our industry, whether that’s due to the uncertainty of the situation, isolation, worries over finances and employment, or the daily stresses of multi-tasking with home-schooling and work,” said Nina Nyman, CMO of UnLtd and co-chair of the Mentally Healthy Change Group.

“From the conversations I’ve had with people across the industry, I’m yet to speak to anyone who isn’t impacted in some way.

“Ironically, the Mentally Healthy 2020 survey closed on 13 March, a few days before most of the COVID-19 restrictions really kicked in across Australia. A lot has changed since and I think it’s safe to assume that some of the findings will look different now. What’s good about this is that we now have a comparison point with a more ‘normal’ time that allows us to measure change.”

The survey is open from today until 8 May for anyone who has worked in the media, marketing or creative industry over the past 12 months, with the results to be released in late May. It takes five to eight minutes to complete, with all responses anonymous and strictly confidential. Only personally de-identified data will be reported.

“As we are working through the data and key findings of the bigger survey, we want to see if and how some of the key indicators have changed following the pandemic,” added Andy Wright, managing director of Streamtime and co-chair of the Mentally Healthy Change Group.

“This pulse study gives us a chance to see what impact the COVID-19 situation has had on some of the main mental health concerns of our industry and which areas we need to focus on as an industry to best support our people.”

Everymind’s acting program manager of mental health and research, Dr Sally Fitzpatrick, said the Institute is pleased to conduct the research, noting: “We’re looking forward to learning more about the specific needs of those working in the media, marketing and creative industries during this challenging period.”
