Meta apologises to users after major global Facebook glitch

Facebook parent Meta has rectified an issue with the company’s News Feed after numerous users reported problems with spam from celebrity pages on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Meta told Mumbrella: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble with their Facebook Feed. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

In an updated statement the tech company said: “Earlier today, a configuration change caused some people to have trouble with their Facebook Feed. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Website outage tracking site Downdetector reported the outage on the platform at around 3:$5pm AEST however, the company seemed to repair the global glitch at around 7pm AEST.

Downdetector data suggested that more than 80% of reports were of problems with the Feed, while the app accounted for 14%.

The majority of users reported seeing several random and some explicit posts to celebrities appearing on their feeds, many from pages they didn’t even follow.

The account affected were the likes of actor Jonah Hill, Mark Zuckerberg, Lady Gaga, Eminem, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 152 million Facebook followers.

At 4pm on Wednesday AEST, The Meta Platforms Inc stock price plunged by 1.94%, which accounts for US$8.4 billion.

Meta Platforms Inc (META) shares are currently trading on NASDAQ at US$163.26 ($A236.3) as of 25 August, with a market cap of US$438.77 billion (A$635.8 billion).
