Catalano’s Weekly Review real estate empire expands to nine publications
The Antony Catalano-led Metro Media Publishing has added another two Melbourne publications to The Weekly Review line up.
Catalano first started Metro Media Publishing in 2010 after he departed Fairfax’s The Age, where he was property editor and marketing director. He launched The Weekly Review, backed by more than 20 real estate agencies as advertisers.
In December of 2011 Fairfax bought a 50 per cent stake in the company.
The relaunch of Fairfax’s Moonee Valley Weekly and Melbourne Times Weekly, which will switch to The Weekly Review’s content model with a focus on lifestyle, local news and real estate.
Catalano, who remains CEO and publisher of MMP, said the addition of the two new titles increases the weekly distribution to more than “one million homes across Melbourne and Geelong”.
He said: “We are focusing the business on growth as we position ourselves for the future.”

Both those titles are already free. The news here is the move away from local news in favour of lifestyle.
Context is that earlier this month Catalano cut seven of eight eastern suburban mastheads.

Thanks for the comment,
Now updated for clarity.

This really means that vital local titles like Melbourne Times Weekly have been shut down and replaced with a syndicated, generic “lifestyle” magazine with different real estate in the back. It’s cheaper that way.

Still the best start-up in years. How he managed to do it is sheer genius. To have Fairfax write a BIG cheque for the very audience they thought they owned is one of the great achievements of modern marketing. The rivers of gold are now owned by Mr.Catalano.
