Monkey business at afr.com
Dr Mumbo was delighted to hear that afr.com is launching a special subscribers-only Thursday media and marketing online update.
After all, a weekly Monday round-up of which TV network Group M has been talking to is not enough for anyone.
But he’s disturbed to hear that there may not be a lot of budget behind this new premium content. Dr Mumbo’s informant tells him that during discussions about writing for the section, he was told that contributors weren’t being paid.
His correspondent tells him: “Appalling given that AFR.com charges … probably means that contributions will come from the heads of advertising companies, who will write puff pieces. I’m reminded of the line by the now dead James Goldsmith when he was asked why he was paying his journalists in London such good salaries: ‘If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys’.”
Telling. And perhaps the thin end of a very big wedge…
