Top stories:

5:05pm – We’re not accusing Ten’s Wake Up of jumping on any band wagons here, but we’re not convinced by the Photoshopping skills, putting Kim Jong-un’s haircut on hosts Natarsha Belling and James Mathieson.

4:22pm – Labor has announced it is going to launch a daily online service, in what it is describing as the party’s “own Crikey” to stop their views being “filtered through the mainstream media”. You can read the details of the new service here and you can also read Dr Mumbo’s wrap of social media’s suggestions for which Labor politicians should cover which sections.

3:23pm – the AFL has appointed a new CEO, and it’s prompted statements from Seven and Southern Cross Austereo and of Course Fox Sports, three of the code’s broadcast partners, paying tribute to the outgoing Andrew Demetriou and the incoming Gillon McLachlan.

SCA CEO Rhys Holleran said TripleM looks forward to continuing its work with the code, while  Patrick Delaney, head of Fox Sports said: “We are thrilled for Gill. There is no better executive take the reins of the AFL following the incredibly success full leadership of Andrew Demetriou. He is highly regarded and respected among the sporting community, there is no questioning the depth of his football knowledge and acumen, and he is closer to the heart of AFL than anyone. It is hard to imagine a candidate who is more passionate and committed to ensuring the game’s success and development than Gillon.”

Seven CEO Tim Worner described it as “a great appointment for the greatest game of all”.

2:53pm – Who says magazines don’t sell any more. this sign was spotted outside a shop in Sydney’s Central Park Mall today:

2:16pm – Mothers Day is coming up (Sunday May 11) and Big W has launched its campaign promoting what you can buy in store for your mum. See the campaign here.

1:37pm – And Double J has now announced its new lineup of presenters, with some interesting names in there, definitely aimed at a target demographic.

1:21pm – Some welcome good news for Droga5 following losses with Woolworths and Cadbury, picking up a mystery project with the drinks brand Frucor.

12:57pm – There’s a hard hitting campaign from BMF for the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse, which asks people who have suffered at the hands of institutions to share their stories.

12:24pm – And earlier Dr Mumbo noted how the new @doublejplays Twitter handle was spouting out hundreds of tweets with the song Express Yourself. It transpires they were playing 12 different versions on a loop harking back to one of their news producers being suspended on Triple J, when they played NWA’s Express Yourself 365 times in a row for a whole day, as a protest. Dr Mumbo has more.

12:08pm – And Double J is now officially live again. The brand which was the original youth music station returns to replace Dig Music on digital radio, and relaunches with a live broadcast by Myf Warhurst with its first song Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds ‘Get Ready for Love’.

And it looks like things are already getting loose. Look out Mark Scott…

12:00pm – In the FYI section today we have a few tidbits, including four Aussie agencies picking up Facebook Studio Awards overnight, and media agency Initiative announcing three wins it says are worth a combined $10m in billings.

11:32am  – A couple of weeks ago Mumbrella ran a series on piracy in Australia which generated some pretty heated debate. In an opinion piece cross-posted from The Conversation Angela Daly asks if proposed legislation is really the answer.

10:36am – Former Seven News head Peter Meakin has been rolled out by Ten, where he’s now news head, on Studio 10 to talk about Roscoe. He says they never did audience testing about Roscoe, adding “audience insights panels are overrated” and with Roscoe “what you see is what you get”.

10:15am – Today sees the relaunch of heritage radio name Double J. However, it’s first track may not be much of a surprise to anyone who is following @doublejplays on Twitter.

9:50am – TV ratings are in. We have the results for My Kitchen Rules and The winner’s announcement was down nearly 500,000 viewers on last year with 2.5m, but Seven will note the fact the final show was up on the previous year, with 2.3m viewers. They also got more than double the audience share of Nine.

9:26am – Tributes continue to come in for Roscoe. David Gyngell and Nine and Seven’s director of news in Sydney Chris Willis, have both paid their condolences.

Here Ten’s Studio 10 executive producer Rob McKnight and Seven’s Sunrise EP Michael Pell pay their respects:

8:56am – Some very sad news emerging this morning is veteran Nine and Seven News presenter Ian ‘Roscoe’ Ross has died at the age of 73.

8:27am – There’s been some talk about the effectiveness of the Ad Standards Board this week on Mumbrella. Well, in other regulatory news UK craft brewery BrewDog has released something of a flippant comeback to a ruling by The Protman Group in the UK, which rules on alcohol advertising breaches, claiming it protects the interests of big breweries at the expense of the little guy.

On behalf of BrewDog PLC and its 14,691 individual shareholders, I would like to issue a formal apology to the Portman Group for not giving a shit about today’s ruling. Indeed, we are sorry for never giving a shit about anything the Portman Group has to say, and treating all of its statements with callous indifference and nonchalance.

“Unfortunately, the Portman Group is a gloomy gaggle of killjoy jobsworths, funded by navel-gazing international drinks giants. Their raison d’être is to provide a diversion for the true evils of this industry, perpetrated by the gigantic faceless brands that pay their wages. Blinkered by this soulless mission, they treat beer drinkers like brain dead zombies and vilify creativity and competition. Therefore, we have never given a second thought to any of the grubby newspeak they disseminate periodically.”

8:16am – MKR (see 8:07am) certainly had the Twitterati talking last night, and it’s even managed to get a mention from Todd Sampson (he of Gruen and Leo Burnett fame):

8:07am – Morning all, and happy hump day. We’ll start this morning with the biggest TV event of the year so far, the grand final of My Kitchen Rules (and why not). And, surprise surprise, the good guys Bree and Jessica from SA won out over the WA pairing of Chloe and Kelly. We’re predicting it to be the biggest rating thing so far this year, so we’ll find out in about an hour. Meanwhile, there’s a handy recap of everything that happened at smh.com.au, where apparently the final felt like it lasted for 37 hours”.
