Mumbrella Sports Marketing Summit and Awards return – women’s pro sports and sportswashing in the limelight

The Mumbrella Sports Marketing Summit and Awards return in August 2023, with sessions featuring Angel City Football Club and MKTG Sports & Entertainment’s Stephanie Rudnick plus Speed Agency’s Ian Perrin already confirmed.

Kicking off the program is Stephanie Rudnick, head of PR at Angel City Football Club and head of global communications at MKTG Sports & Entertainment.

Angel City Football Club of Los Angeles has proven it is changing the game as one of the most well-known women’s sports teams. The team demanded the highest kit sponsorship in women’s sports and has locked in 30 partners with US$50 million.

Rudnick, the company’s first-ever employee, will talk delegates through the team’s origin story and its sponsorship model, where 10% of the value of all sponsorships is reallocated back into the community.

She will also share the data and insights from her colleague at MKTG Sports & Entertainment that prove the power of women’s sport and why the industry needs to not only be taking out their chequebooks, but also showing up for women and girls at games, and in their merch.

Also speaking at the summit is Speed Agency’s managing partner, Ian Perrin, in a session titled ‘Sportswashing: Exploding Near You’.

Sportswashing is a small, but fast-growing sector of the sports marketing ecosystem, fraught with complexity and misunderstanding. The growth has had profound effects on many stakeholders, from broadcasters trying to reduce content costs, to brands trying to navigate complex social issues and to agencies having to recommend placements for their clients.

Perrin will help delegates understand more about sportswashing, and provide guidance as to what the future may hold.

He will answer important, yet confusing questions, like how did it start? What are the objectives? Where is the ethical line?

The Sports Marketing Awards are also returning for the first time since 2019, with 10 categories to enter in, including Sports Agency of the Year, Sports Campaign of the Year, Best On-Ground Activation and Best Athlete Partnership.

The awards recognise individuals and teams that deliver outstanding work and results on behalf of companies, organisations and products based around the sports industry. Previous winners include TSE, Kayo, The Media Store and R/GA Sydney.

Earlybird tickets are now available for the Mumbrella Sports Marketing Summit, and entries to the Awards are now open. The first entry deadline closes midnight, June 9.
