Mumbrellacast: Ad-funded streaming, sanctions and Jane Huxley on IWD

On this week's Mumbrellacast, Emma Shepherd, Andrew Banks and a guest appearance from Phoebe Netto join host Calum Jaspan to break down the week in media and marketing, alongside an interview with Are Media's Jane Huxley.

Disney revealed over the weekend it would be introducing a cheaper, ad-supported subscription to its Disney+ platform. In a company announcement, it said it would be first rolled out across the US at the end of this year, then into other global markets in 2023. Creating a lower price point offering, chairman of Disney media and entertainment distribution, Kareem Daniel said it “is a win for everyone – consumers, advertisers, and our storytellers”. What does this mean for the streaming market? Disney+ is the first major player to jump, but will others follow?

The team also looks at all of the sanctions and moves by media and marketing companies locally and globally in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Pure Public Relation’s Phoebe Netto joins the team to discuss the strategy behind some of the moves, and how advertisers and marketers can be more sensitive and sincere in their approaches.

Finally, Are Media’s Jane Huxley joins the Mumbrellacast in light of International Women’s Day to discuss her role as one of the few female CEOs in Australian publishing, her impressions of the company she has been leading for almost a year.
