Mumbrellacast: Fin results for Seven, HT&E, SCA & more, Optus launches SubHub, plus MLA’s Nathan Low

It’s a financial reporting special this week on the Mumbrellacast, with results from media companies Seven West Media, Southern Cross Austereo, and Here There & Everywhere, as well as holding company Enero Group, all dropping this week.

Seven reported a 240% bump in profits as revenue increased 3.5% to $1.27 billion, but costs are set to rise in FY22 with the Olympics coming at a $50 million loss. Meanwhile, SCA and HT&E reported big growth in digital revenue, so how long will it be until the digital audio market is scalable in Australia? And finally, Enero Group which includes major creative agency BMF reported a rise in revenue of 18.3% to $160.6 million.

This week Optus introduced a new content subscription and membership hub for customers, Optus SubHub. SubHub will complement the recently announced Optus Living Network, and Optus has already partnered with a number of subscription services including Amazon Prime Video. Soon to be onboarded are BritBox, Fetch TV, Netflix, Paramount+ and iQiyi. There are plenty of other non-streaming partners too, and adding multiple services will get customers a discount on the total subscription payment. The team discusses whether consumers will bite on SubHub and how much difference it will make for the average Australian household.

Plus, Zanda Wilson chats with Meat and Livestock Australia’s general manager, marketing and insights, Nathan Low. He reveals how a considered “appetite for risk” helps the MLA continue to capture the cultural zeitgeist year after year, why Australian Lamb and Australian Beef have different “voices” in market, and why MLA will continue to lean into the COVID narrative as other brands avoid it.
