Mumbrellacast: Is it all doom and gloom? Plus new boss for IPG Mediabrands and Nine wins the year

This week, radio company Southern Cross Austereo was forced into mass redundancies, with around 90 roles cut from across the business. It has been a tough end to the year for SCA, after posting a warning to its shareholders on the ASX in October noting weak media and advertising markets, but the Mumbrellacast team doesn’t think the radio business is alone in its plight, with more redundancies to come from across the industry.

The team also break down the Standard Media Index (SMI) data for the month of October. Spend is back 8.5% compared to October last year, a far cry from the prediction that the month may see the ad market turn around. The team discusses where spend is dropping and looks at how the slump is impacting the industry.

Nine won the year in TV, with success aided by its flagship programs, including Married At First Sight, and a strong debut from Lego Masters. It was a close-fought battle for total people with Seven, only coming to a head in the last few weeks of the official ratings period. But with the Olympics and new programming coming to Seven in 2020 and Ten’s growth in the demographics in the second half of the year, the Mumbrellacast team aren’t making any premature predictions for next year.

Finally, the end of last week saw PHD’s CEO Mark Coad announce his departure from the Omnicom agency, before revealing he was joining IPG Mediabrands as Australian CEO. The team chats through the latest shake-up to agency leadership.
