New Australian film Ladies in Black struck by Johnny English at the weekend box office
Australian comedy drama Ladies in Black made $1.865m on its first outing at the weekend box office, but failed to beat the third film in the Johnny English series.
Ladies in Black, which is based on the novel by Madeleine St John, follows the lives of a group of department store employees in the late 1950s. It stars Rachael Taylor, Julia Ormond and Angourie Rice.
The film ran across 328 screens over the weekend, and since its premiere last Thursday, has made $2.245m.
But it did not beat new spy action comedy film Johnny English Strikes Again with earned $2.699m over the weekend, knocking Crazy Rich Asians off the top box office spot after two weeks.
The third film in the Johnny English series, which stars Rowan Atkinson, ran across 365 screens. It is based on the story of a former agent, Johnny English, who must come out of retirement after a cyber-attack reveals all active undercover agents in Britain.
The original Johnny English made a total of $12.526m in Australia, while Johnny English Reborn made a total of $12.697m.
Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick’s mystery thriller, A Simple Favour, added $1.507m in earnings to its total over the weekend. Crazy Rich Asians, which premiered in August, added another $1.468m to its total box office figure, which now sits at $19.201m.
Earning less than A Simple Favour and Crazy Rich Asians this week was The Predator, which pulled in $1.057m, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia report.

The numbers quoted for the previous Johnny English movies match those listed at box office mojo, and they are in $US. They reflect a
massive difference in the exchange rate between 2003 and 2011 when those movies were released.
Their actual Australian box office in $Aust was $12.526 M (2003) and $12.697 M (2011).
