New Spider-Man film earns $2.6m at weekend box office, failing to beat The Grinch

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse pulled in $2.606m in earnings over the weekend across 421 screens, but failed to make more than Universal’s The Grinch.

The animated film tells the story of teenager Miles Morales, who develops mysterious powers after being bitten by a radio active spider. He must use his skills to battle Kingpin, a man who can open portals to other universes, and pull different versions of Spider-Man into his world.

In the US, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse achieved the biggest US opening weekend for an animated film in December, making US$35.4m (AU$50.74m).

Locally, however, the film did not earn as much as The Grinch, which added $2.695m to earnings across 383 screens. Since its premiere, the animated The Grinch film has made $11.312m. The Grinch has topped the weekend box office for the past two weeks.

Other films to make more than $1m this week included Bohemian Rhapsody, which has now made $37.412m in total. The movie, based on the life of popular UK band Queen and its lead singer, Freddie Mercury, made $1.523m over the weekend. Creed II also made another $1.046m at box office, bringing its total to $7.211m.

Meanwhile, Universal’s Mortal Engines managed $697,668. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald sat outside of the top five films of the weekend, with earnings of $681,812.
