New ‘Women In Pop’ magazine set to launch next month

A new all female focused music magazine, Women In Pop, is set to launch next month with the aim of reversing the “injustice towards female musicians”, says the editor and proprietor Paul Mitchell.

Mitchell, who has worked in the media for the past 15 years across both Australia and the UK, is launching Women In Pop because he “was always frustrated about the way the media locally, and internationally, treated female musicians and pop artists”.

If you pick up any music magazine across the world you’ll find very little of it is devoted to women, and new artists find it difficult to gain exposure, especially women in the mainstream music media and I wanted to try and reverse that,” he told Mumbrella.

“Not only do the media misrepresent them, they are under portrayed. As a society as a whole we don’t give female musicians as a whole the respect or gratitude they deserve.”

Former Pacific Magazines Queensland sales director, Jane McGregor, is helping Mitchell launch Women In Pop by locking in advertisers as the sales manager.

The magazine will include advertisements from brands and the publication is currently talking to potential companies about sponsorship arrangements, said Mitchell.

McGregor currently consults at HR company MAARS as well as Women In Pop

When asked about its plans for the future, Mitchell said Women In Pop would be launching an online website when the first issue is published, also offering the publication more opportunities for sponsorship and advertisement in the future, including podcasts, videos, short articles, new music and new releases.

Initially launching as a print magazine Mitchell said it was a strategic move as magazines “gives journalism and content just that little something extra”.

“Despite what people say, yes magazine circulations are going down, but I still believe strongly there is a market for niche publications. We are seeing a few drop off in the big names but walk into any newsagent and the shelves are still full of titles which are fairly niche and are doing very well.

“You could argue its a risk but we think its the right move for our brand,” Mitchell continued.

Women In Pop will consist of only feature articles which profile female musicians and include their background, how they compose music and their opinions on the gender politics within the music industry.

Women In Pop will also have its own playlist on Spotify

“We are not at all interested in gossip, we don’t talk about who’s dating who, who’s fighting with who, who wore what dress at this awards show, we are all about intelligent articles about the craft and the music these women make.”

The editor attributed said its feature article focus was the magazine’s point of difference.

“There are no other magazines that focus purely on women musicians so in that respect we are unique. However, there are a lot good music magazines out there, particularly in Australia there are a lot of good online music blogs and websites, which we are obviously competing for space,” he said.

Set to launch on May 1, the magazine will be released quarterly and can be purchased for $10 in newsagents across Australia, NZ, US, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

Women In Pop will be distributed by Eight Point Distribution.
