News Limited readers have negative mindset, claims Fairfax publisher Gome

amanda gomeThe publisher of Fairfax’s business periodicals Amanda Gome has launched a broadside at rival News Limited, attacking its reach and readers’ mindset.

The comment came on the same day that Fairfax Media’s Smart Investor unveiled a redesign and new iPad app, and News Limited’s The Eureka Report launched a new redesign and restructure of its email service. Both titles target investors.

Gome – publisher of BRW, SmartInvestor and Asset at Fairfax Media – made the comments during a speech to launch the new look Smart Investor.

Trumpeting a weekly tie-up with sister newspaper the Australian Financial Review, she said: “Our competitors can’t do that. One of our competitors, they have tabloids in their stable. And their readers are not your potential clients. Their reach is very limited and their readers think the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

“We know that Fairfax readers are progressive, optimistic, they are looking to the future and they like to build wealth.”

Editor James Frost took the helm of Smart Investor earlier this year. He previously worked at The Australian and was editor of The Eureka Report, where he worked for six years.

Today’s relaunch of Smart Investor also includes a new look for the magazine and new daily and Saturday newsletter.

Meanwhile, Eureka Report – which News Limited bought a year ago – today announced “a significant upgrade” to its site.

News Limited declined to respond to Gome’s comments about its audience. As well as its tabloids, the publisher also includes The Australian and Business Spectator in its portfolio.
