Nine promises ‘juicy’ breakfast TV in Today promo with Allison Langdon and ‘very naughty boy’ Karl Stefanovic
Pivoting away from the serious journalism-focused promotions which ran during the tennis, Nine has taken a different approach for Today promos during Married At First Sight.
With strong inspiration from Hannibal Lecter and Silence of the Lambs, the promo, which aired last night during the premiere episode of MAFS, sees Karl Stefanovic behind bars for being a ‘very naughty boy’.

But fans need not despair, his on-air partner Allison Langdon is here to save him. Sipping her morning coffee from a Today-branded cup, she tells Stefanovic “this time, things are going to be different” and asks him if he’s “going to behave”, while holding up a Hannibal Lecter-esque mask.
The famous scene which inspired the Today promo
Stefanovic tells Langdon, and the audience, that they’ll just have to “trust him”.
The promo is a far cry from the serious ads which were running earlier in the year, promoting the duo’s coverage of the bushfire crisis. The team returned to air earlier than anticipated specifically to cover the environmental disaster.
Despite the revamped lineup – Stefanovic and Langdon replaced Deborah Knight and Georgie Gardner who had just a year on air together – Today has failed to knock long-time breakfast leader Sunrise off the top spot.
1.154m metro viewers tuned in to Married At First Sight’s premiere episode, giving it the biggest launch of its run.
Good to see them finding a reference to grab the younger audience. (FYI Silence of the Lambs was released in 1991)
