Nova unveils ‘For the love of Sydney’ ad for Fitzy & Wippa breakfast show
DMG’s Nova Radio has unveiled a new TV campaign to promote its upcoming new morning program, the Fitzy & Wippa Sydney breakfast show.
Featuring the ’70s Dan Hill ballad ‘Sometimes When We Touch’, the ad takes a tour of 18 Sydney locations in which presenters Ryan Fitzgerald and Michael Wipfli show their love for the city by hugging various landmarks.

The ad, which features NSW premier Barry O’Farrell, was created inhouse by the Nova team.
Tony Thomas, dmg Radio Australia group marketing director, said: “We wanted to create an immediate relationship between Fitzy & Wippa and Sydneysiders. We wanted to portray the Fitzy & Wippa brand – which irreverent, genuine and self-deprecating.”
Thomas said it was “difficult to predict” how the show – which replaces outgoing breakfast stalwarts Merrick & Dools – would perform in upcoming ratings surveys. But he said that the show had been created “for the long term play” and was “very confident” in its audience pulling-power.
“The show debuts three quarters of the way through the ratings survey year, so we will be on the front foot for 2012,” he added.
The campaign will also run across billboards, press and online through September.
Breakfast with Fitzy & Wippa on Nova 969 from 6-9am debuts on Monday 12 September.
That’s actually a surprisingly good ad for a radio brand!

Sydney doesn’t have a Premier; it has a Lord Mayor. NSW has a Premier 🙂

I love this ad. I wish I worked at nova

Who would’ve ever thought Sometimes when we touch and Barry O’Farrell could be in the same ad and it be entertaining. I couldn’t help watching the whole thing and gotta admit had a good chuckle to myself

It’s a nice spot, but most radio shows try and position themselves as irreverent, genuine and self-deprecating… nothing unique here.

Thank god for a radio ad with an actual idea rather than a flashy loud piece of crap that shouts at you

@steve personally i’m not sure I would call Kyle and Jacki O irreverent, genuine and self deprecating?

This is brilliant! Had the whole office laughing. Looking forward to hearing the guys on Monday.

Great stuff
The first radio ad not to talk about “more of this” and “less of that”
Just feel good about your city and them
Well done Tony T!
Radio station advertsing just took a big leap forward

Much better than their last attempt… Who did it? Show some credits people.

Hi Adguy,
The ad was created inhouse.
Cheers,

Love it! Well done to all involved!

If they’re as much fun as they are during the drive time slot, they’ve earned themselves another loyal listener. Good luck boys!

Top effort and incredibly well shot. Great to see Nova taking a risk and it definitely paying off from a creative point of view. Makes me actually want to have a listen to the boys.

I can’t believe that Fitzy guy is still around. Yawn.

So much better than the new VB ad and I bet 10% of the production cost. Great job

Love it. These boys just make you want to hang out with them. Look forward to seeing what they’re capable of doing the early shift! Pls can Doolz have his own show – something a bit more current affairs.

The spell has been broken! It’s always been a mystery to me how funny radio guys can make such unfunny tv ads, consistently. Finally, a really funny (and emotional) ad from a radio station..and the radio stars don’t even speak. This would have been a brilliant ad for Tourism Australia if only they had the nerve to be this simple.

Media-owner produced stuff is almost always awful or just wallpaper, but this is refreshing. Nice thought, well executed. TV stations could learn a thing or two.

Absolutely pissed myself. Best radio ad I have seen

I want to do Fitzy every which way. If I ever listened to the radio I’d surely listen to Fitzy. Unfortcho ads on the radio drive me bananas and make the whole experience far too unpleasant.

Just reinforces how good these 2 are. We have them on everyday and this ad perfectly represents their personality. Great work nova

Ok… How many of these comments are from DMG staff? Go on, put up your hands.

@anon 12:26 – You’re right, Kyle and Jackie O would be the exception, they actually do position themselves differently to other radio shows. But they’re not the only other breakfast show in Sydney.

have to agree with Ted #25 – i’d like me a nice slice of that Fitzy..

Reminds me of The Really Really Love Sydney ad Merrick and Rosso did. They put Bob Carr in theirs.

Woah! This has got to be the best shot radio ad I’ve ever seen.
There’s some real warmth in here, I can already see Nova’s audience hugging stuff and taking pics of it. As they say, live life Nova!

I listened to Nova 969 this morning. The boys certainly are:
– irreverent
– genuine
– self-defecating

Umm, has no-one noticed this is a direct copy of a BBC ad? Check it out for yourself.
“The ad was created inhouse”? Not at all really.

Saw it on TV last night. Nice spot

BBC Fan – you are right!!
DMG – the imitator not the innovator. Sounds different? Sounds copied.
Do you reckon they paid the BBC a fee for copying their idea?

Oh dear – that’s awkward Nova…a 100% rip off of the BBC Radio ad.
Shame – i thought for a minute nova was back to being original and innovative.

Enjoyed the Sydney hugging but very very very similar to the original BBC ad.

Nova have got form on the “borrowing ideas” front. But outside of the industry, will anybody give a shit. I think not.
Having said that, I join the ranks of those wondering how many of the gushingly positive comments are coming from Nova’s PR People themselves.
I mean anybody who loves Ryan Fitzgerald (The Billy Brownless for the new millennium) that much has to be viewed with some suspicion.
