Podcast downloads hit 50m in March, Casefile True Crime retains top spot

The total number of podcast downloads in March hit a new high of 50 million according to Triton Digital’s Podcast Ranker. Up from 43 million last month.

The Ranker provides insight into the Top 100 Podcasts in Australia as well as the Top 10 Publishers in Australia from 1 March through 31 March 2021, as measured by Triton’s Podcast Metrics measurement service.

Audioboom’s Casefile True Crime podcast has retained the #1 spot as the most downloaded podcast, followed by ARN/iHeartPodcast Network Australia’s Stuff You Should Know which also stayed steady at #2.

The highest new entrant to the list was Nine’s The Sure Thing, at #22, which is produced by The Australian Financial Review.

The most improved was also from Nine, with its Naked City podcast coming in at #47, up 35 spots. The Rush Hour with MG from Southern Cross Austero (SCA) was also up an impressive 30 spots to #88. The biggest drop on the list went to Wondery’s The Apology Line which fell 58 spots to #85.

A number of other new entries to appear in the Top 100 Podcast Ranker this reporting period include Cautionary Tales from ARN/iHeartMedia, Triple M Footy AFL from SCA at #34 and Drive with Joel & Fletch from Sports Entertainment Network at #87.

As for the All-Australian Top 100 Ranker, Hamish & Andy from SCA – LiSTNR, came in at #2 while new entries for the ranking include Outspoken the Podcast from Diamantina, Something To Talk About with Samantha Armytage from News Corp Australia, and Unlock The Greatness Within from SCA – LiSTNR.

Participating publishers in the Australian Ranker include ARN/iHeartMedia, Audioboom, Babyology, Diamantina, Fear and Greed, Kinderling Kids Radio, News Corp Australia, Nine, Nova, Podshape, Schwartz Media, SCA, Sports Entertainment Network, Stitcher Media, TOFOP Productions, Wavelength Creative, West Australian Newspapers, and Wondery.
