Publicis Groupe announces new flexible working framework centring on ‘behaviours’, rather than set policy
Publicis Groupe Australia has implemented a new flexible working framework which will ditch a prescriptive policy in favour of new flexible working ‘behaviours’.
The announcement:
Publicis Groupe Australia today announced Publicis Liberté, a new flexible working approach that will see the group replace existing workplace policies with six flexible working ‘behaviours’.
Michael Rebelo, Publicis Groupe ANZ CEO said being able to offer staff flexibility is the future of work.
“At a time of tremendous change in our business and the workplace we need to be more progressive and adaptive as an employer. Allowing our people to fit work in with their lives and not the other way round will ensure our people are happy, healthy and productive. Ultimately that makes them better partners for our clients, and able to deliver better outcomes for their businesses.”Publicis Groupe ANZ has spent the last 18 months developing the new flexible framework, publishing internal whitepapers, conducting internal and external interviews, technical audits and more recently, holding staff training workshops from CEOs right through to all staff. As part of the new approach, a range of measurement tools and processes have been developed to support agency leaders, managers and staff to deal with new situations as they arise.
Leading Publicis Liberté is Pauly Grant, Chief Talent Officer, Publicis Groupe ANZ, who says, “The flexible working framework has been introduced to take a more progressive approach and is an acknowledgment that where a person works, how they work and the hours of work needed to perform their role is unique to the individual”.
Publicis Liberté will be based on six flexible working behaviours:
- Set Your Boundaries
- Trust One Another
- Focus on Outputs
- We Are All Different
- Communicate Effectively
- Use Tech to Your Advantage
Publicis Media ANZ’s Associate Director of Strategic Projects, Scott Ramsay, said, “We found that most flexibility policies often come with a load of asterisks that don’t take into account the needs of teams or the individual. By allowing teams to set their own terms, we believe Publicis Liberté will be the catalyst to create a new normal in the way we work as a business.”

Kudos to Publicis for leading the agency charge into the modern era.
Now….will it actually be successful in practise and not just in name?
i.e – will it still be frowned upon to announce that you are WFH for the day?

This is progressive for Aus. It’s about time creative industries ask each employee “how do you work best?” especially for creatives, instead of dictating how creative people work…
I believe we all need boundaries, however really simple changes can make a big diff to output. Simply asking the question “how do you work best?” is awesome.

Usual lip-service and fluff from out of touch agency networks and chief talent officers that are nowhere near the realities of the talents they employ. Hard to believe people are paid good money and almost nearly two years to come up with this drivel.

Superb to see – nature of work is changing and companies need to stay relevant and stay ahead! #whatwinnersdo ???

Over seeing large agencies talk smack about flexible working but then you notice people who utilise these new opportunities don’t see promotions, mums returning to work given full time or nothing and we won’t start on the small amount of 40 something-year-old mums who have been stuck in the same senior account management role for far too long despite being excellent at what they do.
My guess is “use tech to your advantage” will translate to “why aren’t you responding to emails while you’re attempting to have a nice weekend away with your so when your phone is with you?”

It’s great to see the negative comments already from people who clearly aren’t employees of Publicis and don’t know anything about it. For a lot of us (I am a Publicis employee), this is already the reality for how we work, so it is real.

I am not a Publicis employee and this is how we work too. It’s just a list of how advertising people work, right? I don’t get it.

As the owner of a small studio with <10 staff, this is what we’ve been doing for years already. In fact, we just got rid of our office in December as everyone preferred working from home.
The success of this model comes down to the staff. If you can be motivated to remain productive whilst working from home, a cafe, or wherever you choose, then go for it! If you can’t, then find a company that is still set on having everyone come into an office every day.
