RaboDirect’s creepy dream thief warns of rivals’ low-interest savings accounts

Whybin\TBWA\Tequila Sydney has created a new campaign for RaboDirect based on the insight that Australians lose $4 billion every year in interest by leaving their money in low-interest savings accounts. The ad attacks rival banks through a sinister bank manager, played by actor Simon Westaway from gangland series Underbelly, who steals people’s dreams by giving them low-interest accounts.

Whybin\TBWA\Tequila’s creative group head John McKelvey said: “It’s a real challenger’s strategy, aimed at eliciting a strong response from the audience. The creative specifically targets people with low interest accounts and forces them to act in order to steal back the dreams they’ve been saving for.”

The ad was the work of the recently hired team Peter Galmes, John McKelvey and James Ross-Edwards; plus Derek Anderson and Julia Elton-Bott, who joined the agency earlier this year.

Print and digital will support the TV work, to launch this Sunday. It runs through to September.

The ad is a latest example of a bank attacking its rivals after NAB played a prank on executives from CommBank, ANZ and Westpac.
