Radio ratings prove Sydney is still Jones’ town

Sydney’s talk station 2GB has stormed its way further ahead in the latest radio ratings which were released today.

In a survey round where little changed across the country, honours were evenly spread between radio companies when it comes to the top rating station in each metro market. In Sydney it belongs to MRN; in Melbourne it’s Austereo; in Brisbane it’s DMG; in Perth it’s Austereo and in Adelaide it’s the ABC.

Sydney

Despite the absence of its talisman presenter Alan Jones for some of the ratings period – which covered Feb 15 to May 2 excluding Easter – 2GB’s audience share rose from 14.6% to 15.6%. The station has now dominated the Sydney market for 41 consecutive survey periods.

Jones’ breakfast timeslot on 2GB saw an increase of 0.4% to 17.7% audience share while Ray Hadley’s morning share rose by 1.6% to 19.1%

Russell Tate, chairman of the Macquarie Radio Network – which includes 2GB and 2CH – said: “I would like to congratulate the entire staff. The success of the programming line-up is translating into a strong revenue performance. It has been very satisfying to work with such professionals.”

Meanwhile, among the FM stations, Austereo’s TripleM clawed back lost ground although it remains will behind sister station 2Day FM.

In the bad tempered battle for breakfast, Kyle & Jackie O’s lead over Merrick & Rosso & Kate Ritchie  narrowed slightly. The 2Day FM show audience fell by 0.7% to 10.7% while Merrick & Rosso went up 0.1% to 8.2%. This didn’t prevent a victory Twitter message from Kyle Sandilands saying: “U know me I’m never 1 to brag, but the ratings just came out & we’re #1 again. Sorry merrick & rosso.Kate, I told u….sinking ship!! Kyle x”

Melbourne

In Melbourne, Austereo’s Fox FM leapt from third most listened to station, 3.5% behind the most popular station ABC 774, to number one station. The station’s rise in share by 2.1% to 14.9% was the biggest of any station in the country.

The combination of Hamish & Andy from 4-6pm and reheated Kyle & Jackie O from 6-7pm has given Fox FM a grip on the 4-7pm drivetime segment in Melbourne. The station’s share of 22% in that timeslot is greater than any other station in any timeslot in the country.

Meanwhile ABC774’s audience fall of 3.3% for the period was the biggest fall of any station in the country. That could possibly be explained by a falloff from high listenership to the station at the end of the previous ratings period driven by the bushfires.
