Ron Howard’s epic whale tale In the Heart of the Sea becalmed at the box office

The star-power combination of Chris Hemsworth and director Ron Howard was not enough to lift the Moby Dick adventure In the Heart of the Sea above the $1 million mark on the movie’s debut, with the film taking $876,237 from 429 screens.

As the retelling of the whale tale sat becalmed, the domination of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 in the Australian box office continued, with the the final instalment of the film franchise adding $2,836,979 from 442 screens to bring its tally to $22,352,770.

James Bond’s Spectre continued in the runner-up slot, just narrowly missing out on breaking through the $3o,000,000 barrier reaching a total of $29,137,225 on the back of earning $2,103,423 from 447 screens.

Sony Pictures’ Hotel Transylvania also remained in third place in its second week after opening earning $1,478,127 from 409 screens to bring its total to $4,482,982, ahead of Rocky rehash Creed, with Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan, which pulled $1,230,211 from 197 screens.

Aussie flick The Dressmaker continues to hang around in the top ten with $589,853 on 275 screens, with takings of $16.295m since opening at the end of October.
