Saturday Courier Mail gets a revamp

News Queensland will this weekend launch a revamped Saturday Courier-Mail.

The announcement:

Friday October 7, 2011 –

On Saturday 8th October, Queensland’s biggest-selling Saturday newspaper gets a fresh new look, with a big emphasis on helping its readers to get a lot more out of life.

The Saturday Courier-Mail will have a sharper front-page that showcases more of the content, while some smart redesigning of the masthead draws a clearer line between the Saturday and weekday editions.

Turn to the inside, and the fresh new content keeps on coming, all guided by extensive research amongst readers, and all designed to consolidate the paper’s status as the best and most authoritative source of news and information as the weekend kicks off, every weekend.

The biggest change is the introduction of a new ‘Life’ section – currently running in an online format – packed with ideas on things to do, places to go, and what to see. There’s a practical skew to the content, with a fortnightly calendar and event planner, plus extra coverage of shopping and dining out. The Focus section is relaunching as Insight, exploring issues in depth, and creating a forum for the commentary and views of the paper’s own experts, combined with input from readers.

Sport also gets a revamp, with better post-game analysis, a Coaching Clinic (with web video support) and a new column by Rebecca Wilson. The Courier-Mail’s award-winning magazine, QWeekend, will now feature stronger stories and new opinion columnists, while award-winning journalist Trent Dalton has a roving brief to create more of the big stories that have provoked such a positive response from readers.

Michael Crutcher, Editor of The Courier-Mail, said “Our readers told us that they value our journalistic authority – our ability to provide them with a richer, deeper analysis of everyday issues, which in turn helps them make informed decisions on things that are important to them. This is a real vindication of our continuing investment in quality journalism, and it’s an encouraging sign for the long-term future of our newspapers and the valuable and wide-ranging role that they play in the local community. This newspaper helps readers catch up on the week with journalists who break down the big stories. Our business and sports sections have been revamped to become the ideal weekend companion. Plus, we introduce Life. It’s a section that showcases the best of Queensland’s vibrant arts scene plus gives readers a guide to their weekends.”

Incorporating all of the feedback and suggestions from extensive reader research, The Saturday Courier-Mail is now the ‘complete package’ for readers and advertisers.

News Queensland’s advertising agency, Junior, is handling the new creative work for The Saturday Courier-Mail, with a substantial marketing campaign utilising television, radio, press, and online launching October 6th.
