Seven wins quiet Friday night on TV with no shows passing 1m metro viewers

Seven was top of the ratings leaderboard on Friday night thanks largely to its news and lifestyle offering, with no shows surpassing 1m metro viewers.

The most-watched program of the evening was Seven News at 6pm with 915,000 metro viewers, according to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings. 

Nine News was not far behind with 900,000, and the second half-hour of Seven News/Today Tonight had 857,000. The second half of Nine News came in at fourth position with 835,000.

Seven’s Better Homes & Gardens secured fifth position with 626,000 metro viewers.

The top 10 programs for the evening across the metro markets was rounded out by Nine’s A Current Affair (609,000), ABC News (605,000), Seven’s The Chase Australia (598,000), and Nine’s Hot Seat (514,000). Ten snuck into the top 10 with The Living Room, which had 457,000 viewers.

Seven’s Friday night AFL, whcih saw the Sydney Swans take on Essendon, placed 12th for the evening, but only screened on the main channel in Melbourne (360,000) and Adelaide (89,000).

Nine’s NRL offering for the evening placed 18th in the metro markets, with 204,000 viewers in Sydney and 133,000 in Brisbane.

Once regional numbers were factored in, including broadcasts on affiliate stations, four programs exceeded 1m viewers across the country – all of which were on Seven – Seven News (1.492m), Seven News/Today Tonight at 6:30pm (1.270m), Better Homes & Gardens (1.097m), and The Chase Australia (1.027m).

The football broadcasts also had a slight bump in numbers thanks to regional viewers, with Seven’s AFL climbing to 588,000 (placing it in 15th place nationally), and Nine’s NRL pulling 548,000 (placing it in 16th nationally).

Overall Seven won the night with a 23.7% audience share, ahead of Nine’s 15.9%, Ten’s 11.3%, ABC’s 10.4% and SBS’ 4.41%.
