Seven’s Commonwealth Games swells to more than 1.3m, Young Sheldon and Bachelor in Paradise slide

Nine and Ten’s entertainment shows have continued to slide against Seven’s Commonwealth Games’ strong audience numbers, which last night pulled in more than 1.3m viewers.

Last night, Australia’s medal-winning swim team, the men’s and women’s 100m finals and women’s 10,000m final, boosted Monday evening’s audience to 1.338m across the metro cities and as it moved into night time, that number bulged to 1.453m.

Nationally audiences were 1.962m and 2.084m, according to OzTam’s overnight preliminary ratings.

The night time coverage led the 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54 key ad demographics and, overall, Seven’s biggest audiences are coming from Melbourne. The night time Commonwealth Games coverage had 455,000 Melbourne viewers.’

But it wasn’t just The Commonwealth Games pulling audiences across to Seven, with the 6pm bulletin finishing with an 1.080m metro audience, beating Nine News’ 1.011m.

However The Commonwealth Games did not lead in the multi-channels. It was led by ABC Kids’ The Justine Clarke Show, with 171,000 viewers.

Seven’s Commonwealth Games had a marked impact on the rival networks, with Nine’s new comedy Young Sheldon,  dipping from 933,000 last Monday to 767,000 metro viewers. Nine’s Big Bang Theory, which ran at 8pm, pulled in 656,000. Meanwhile Ten’s Bachelor in Paradise didn’t crack 700,000, averaging 673,000 metro viewers for the evening. Last Monday, it had an average audience of 707,000.

However Ten’s Bachelor in Paradise did perform in the advertising demographics, coming in second across the 16-39s and 18-49s.

ABC’s Four Corners investigation into the Australian Tax Office delivered a metro audience of 627,000 last night, while Australian Story and Media Watch managed 533,000 and 521,000 respectively.

Looking to the main channel average audience shares, Seven came out on top at 33.7% while Nine posted a 16.3% average. Ten slipped ahead of the ABC last night with shares of 11.9%, 11.4% and 4.2%.
