Snap Inc. to launch call and messaging feature on the web in Australia and NZ

Social media platform, Snap Inc., will soon launch a calling and messaging feature on the web across Australia and New Zealand.

To access Snapchat for Web, Snapchatters can head to web.snapchat.com, log in with their Snapchat username and password, and pick up their conversations right where they left off on mobile, but now from the big screen.

They’ll be able to take advantage of all of the features from messaging on the platform’s mobile app, like Chat Reactions, and Chat Reply, plus Lenses coming soon for video calls. Snapchatters will also be able to send Snaps right from their computer.

Snap Chat said, “like all of our products, our team designed Snapchat for the Web with privacy and safety in mind.” The platform will launch with a privacy screen that hides the Snapchat window if you click away for another task.

Furthermore, the platform said, “with so many in our community spending more time online, whether it is for remote learning or working, streaming or just plain browsing – we saw a huge opportunity to make it easier for our community to stay connected throughout their day, and we cannot wait to bring our favourite fundamental Snapchat capabilities to the web.”

Ryan Thomas, who leads the Sydney-based engineering group, said: “We’ve got a very talented team of local engineers who build Calling for Snapchat, and have extended this onto Snapchat for Web. With over 100 million Snapchatters making calls to their friends on Snapchat every month, we knew this was a critical element to get right. We’re pleased that an important part of the Snapchat for Web experience has been created here in Australia and will be utilised by people all over the world.”

In April, Snap Inc. released its financial results for the quarter that ended 31 March 2022.

The Q1 2022 financial highlights showed that revenue increased 38% to US$1,063 million (A$ 1.44 million), compared to the prior year.

Net loss was US$360 million (A$489 million), compared to US$287 million (A$389 million) in the prior year.
