Amazon Web Services outage takes websites including Stan and Pedestrian.TV down
Websites powered by Amazon Web Services including streaming platform Stan and youth site Pedestrian.TV have been hit by network issues across the country which are being blamed on storms lashing the Sydney area.
Dozens of major websites and platforms including Foxtel, Fox Sports, car sharing service Go Get and the Daily Telegraph’s NRL Super Coach site, which have all been down.
Thousands of users of the Nine and Fairfax owned streaming service Stan have been unable to log in to it due to a technical issue which are thought to be related to severe weather currently lashing the Sydney region, on what is likely to be one of its highest usage days of the year so far.
Pedestrian.TV is also down at the moment.
Stan tweeted at around 4pm: “Some customers are unable to log into Stan at the moment. We are investigating the issue and will provide an update ASAP.”
The Amazon Dashboard, which shows how the service is operating across different continents, shows issues in Sydney.
If your app absolutely has to be online at all times without question (eg Stan, GoGet), then surely you would utilise multiple AWS Availability Zones?! That’s the point of Availability Zones after all.

Why do Amazon Web Services not have 24/7 geographical failover? If you are using a 3rd party provider you need to make sure they provide appropriate contingency plans. You can’t be subject to single points of failure in 2016.

Can you confirm Fox Sports actually went down during the aws outage? What’s your measure for that?
