State of Origin II draws 2.404m to watch Queensland clinch the series

The second State of Origin match saw a metro audience of 2.404m tune in to Nine to watch Queensland win the series 26 to 16.

That time adjusted audience result is down on last year when the second match of the series drew 2.615m and also down on the first State of Origin match in 2016, which earlier this month drew a record audience of 2.708m.

According to the OzTAM preliminary ratings, the pre-match broadcast drew 1.36m metro viewers across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, with 1.315m viewers from those cities watching the post-match broadcast.

The State of Origin game was the most-watched show across the key advertising demographics (16-39, 18-49 and 25-54) and the most watched show in Sydney (997,000), Brisbane (805,000) and Melbourne (387,000), Adelaide (81,000).

State of Origin boosted Nine’s audience share to 36.5% on its main channel to win the night.

Outside of the Origin, Masterchef was the most watched non-news/sports program with an audience of 927,000 tuning into Ten at 7.30pm. Seven’s Highway Patrol, also in the same timeslot did not make the top 20 programs.

Over on the ABC Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell and The Chaser’s Election Desk drew 552,000 and 527,000 respectively.

In news Seven News won the 6pm bulletin with 1.112m compared to 1.055m but Nine won the 6.30pm bulletin with 1.056m to 931,000.

While Nine won the night in main channel audience share Seven had 13.5%, Ten had 12.1% and the ABC 9.8%.
