Sydney agency Step Change has hired a chief change agent as it continues to build its business around a mixed strategic and creative offering.

Lisa Mathews, former strategy director with Design Bridge in the UK and Singapore, has joined the agency in the newly-created role.

Step Change CEO Ashton Bishop, said the creation of the new role was an important step as the agency continued to grow, having already worked with clients including News Corp, Sony, ANZ and Australian Pork.

“Too often, we see brilliant strategy fizzle out or get diluted as businesses either don’t know how to implement or don’t have the resources to implement their strategic thinking. What these businesses need, to drive marketing initiatives forward, is deployment,” Bishop said.

“What clients need are change agents – strategically-minded agency people, who are great at maintaining the relationship, and are able to negotiate complex deliveries, ensuring the strategy hits the bottom line and not the bottom draw.”

Mathews, who has also worked with Unilever in South Africa, said the new division of the agency would help bring other elements of the business together.

“We’re the glue that ensures strategy truly does meet creativity, both in the quality of creative work delivered and in how the strategic and creative work is implemented in the marketplace,” Mathews said.

Mathews will be joining Bishop, Step Change head of Strategy Glenn Bartlett and change agent Clare Rainbow on stage at Mumbrella 360 curating Stump the Strategist.
