Still going bananas at Wrigley

The banana saga continues. Horticulture Australia is sticking to its guns and seems unwilling to let The Wrigley Company get away with featuring a banana in its Wrigley’s Extra chewing gum TV ad.

If you’ve been following the story you’ll know by now that Horticulture Australia has lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Bureau in a bid to get the Wrigley’s ad either amended or withdrawn.

The industry body is up in arms because it feels that the ad depicts fruit as causing tooth decay. It has also written directly to Wrigley whose marekting department has fired a letter back pretty much saying, well, no, ‘not gonna happen’.

But it’s time to watch out Wrigley, because Horticulture Australia says it is now putting a call out for “banana allies to boycott chewing gum” (yes, this was really written in the press release) unless the ad is withdrawn or modified. It’s now apparently Horticulture Australia’s “quest to get this big American confectionary company to listen to reason”.

Of course, the irony of all this is, is that demand for bananas has never been stronger. So, what’s the issue you ask? We’re scratching our heads as well.
