Sunrise’s Mel deviates from the script
It’s amazing what a difference a single letter can make, as Seven’s Sunrise presenter Melissa Doyle demonstrated at 6.59am this morning.
Introducing a story about a convicted a former sex offender, it’s generally best not to read ” He’s deviant”, if your autocue says “He’s defiant.”
To her credit, and that of co-host David Koch, they both managed to keep straight faces.
And indeed, it’s been something of a comical week for the Sunrise. Yesterday the show appealed for anyone who had sent an email to resend it after sports presenter Mark Beretta confessed to deleting the contents of the wrong inbox, losing around 100,000 messages in the process. There are spammers out there who would weep for that lost database.
There’s a reason “Sunrise” is compelling viewing for anyone half literate and it isn’t because they are.
The hashtag I gave the show is #buffoons and their treatment of the Ferguson question all morning gives no argument for changing it. Ferguson’s situation poses complicated questions that are beyond being addressed through the lens Melissa Doyle frequently announces is her primary qualification: “I’m a mum”.

I take it you mean it’s compelling viewing for anyone at least half literate? (Which, as you’re a viewer, would include yourself.)

I liked it best this week when a female roving reporter signed off from a Salsa Dance-off with ‘Arrivederci!!’
Again, the presenters managed to keep straight faces while swapping an uncertain glance. Can’t remember if it was Sunrise or the other one…
