Supercheap Auto announces Big Break ad competition winner

Supercheap Auto has announced Drew Kendall as the winner of its Big Break competition, with his ad to run through the rest of the 2017 Supercar season.

The competition, which challenged consumers to make an ad for the brand, was announced in March.

A Perth based filmmaker, Kendall took home $20,000, and earned $160,000 worth of airtime for his ad.

‘The Rarest Card’ sees an enthusiastic dad trying to strike a deal with his son, after finding out he had won a ‘rare’ Supercheap Auto gift card through a trading game at school.

Kendall said of the win: “I’ve been thinking about this competition every day for the past month, focusing all my time and energy on it, so it proves that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

“We were sitting in third place for the majority of the contest and at times it felt like we couldn’t get the votes to catch up, but we knew when campaigning for votes that we had to be honest.

“We made sure we got the message out that our intentions for entering the contest were to follow our dream and make a career for ourselves from this experience,” he added.

Kendall’s idea came from memories of primary school, when older kids said something cool, and would ‘haggle’ younger kids to see what they could get for it.

He added he would share the money with his cast and crew.

“We were very lucky to have such a talented cast that were willing to push themselves and try different ideas and the kid was a real trooper. I will be sharing the winning money between the cast and crew, but I also might try and sneak in a cheeky holiday before I go back to work.”

Supercheap Auto’s David Bauer, general manager, customer communication and engagement, said the decision was a close call, with more than 50,000 votes involved in selecting the top ad.

“‘The Rarest Card’ crossed the finish line just 139 votes in front, which goes some way in showing how much talent we have here in Australia and in New Zealand. The level of entries this year was exceptional but the best part of the competition is seeing these aspiring filmmakers now go to the next level in their careers.”
