Tourism Victoria’s PR foray targets dodgy Sydney men
Brand experience agency Play has created a series of spoof video dating profiles of Sydney male stereotypes as part of a PR campaign to persuade single women to visit Victoria in the hope of snaring a man.
The Melbourne Match campaign – the first by the agency since winning Tourism Victoria’s PR account earlier this year, will also see ten women – five of them with a media profile, three of them “creative” types and two competition winners sent on dates with Melbourne men.
Play’s business development manager Brendan Fearn said the names would be announced next week.
The campaign has already generated significant media coverage.
- Come down, Sydney gals, for a creative match / The Age
- Campaign to lure Sydney women to Melbourne / The Herald Sun
- HANDS OFF OUR WOMEN SCARF BOY / Joe Hildebrand, The Daily Telegraph
- Tourism Victoria tries its hand at matchmaking / thUMBRELLA
Not a bad idea to get women to Melbourne for a visit and shopping, not just for men, but as women today expect nothing short of perfection personified I’m sure they’ll be just as disappointed in Melbourne men as they are with Sydney men because Brad Pitt or George Clooney aren’t a couple of the candidates. I also wonder how outraged women’s groups would be if they were portrayed in such a stereotypical way.

If this was the calibre of men in Sydney I would go to Melbounre too but like all campaigns and similar (Australlian Idol for example) you pick the biggest nobs to make for interesting viewing. As a guy it’s disturbing if we all get tared with this brush I hope women see it for what it is, a spoof and a cleaver one at that.

Yeh ladies, come on down to Melbourne, where you can choose between the guys are all a nice, pasty white colour from being indoors all day (which contrasts nicely with all their black / navy clothes) and the guys who like to live on the wild side and wear brown! Yessir! The only problem is, no matter which dude you choose, they will steal your favourite jeans to wear down to the cafe to pose and hang out 🙂 (hey, I’m a melbournite, I’m allowed to make these comments 😛 )

Good idea – but I wouldn’t call 4 stories significant media coverage

Love a good stereotype because why are they stereotypes? Because it’s true about many – that’s how stereotypes evolve. Now that I’ve seen this I don’t need to go out in Sydney this weekend. Might head to Melbourne instead; although there is only one suited-up stereotype there so doesn’t give me a lot of choice!
As a Sydney girl, I can think of a lot of other reasons to go to Melbourne – why not show an immaculately suited guy happily going to every shop with you on Chapel St, Bridge Rd, city and every other shopping precinct AND carrying all your bags?

Having seen the PR brief for this campaign I think this idea is absolutely fantastic!
Though it might not necessarily grab headlines, it’s already done the rounds among my female friends in Sydney and we’ve all had a great laugh at the YouTube Sydney boys vids. Through a cheeky anngle, it brings Melbourne’s offering to a highly important audience this winter (as women predominantly decide on weekend breaks when in a couple, go on girls weekends etc) and has created points of difference between the two cities.
Girls plan holidays and girls talk about men, a perfect synergy – I wish I thought of it – well done!

Hi catnmouse,
Those stories were just a few we noticed ourselves. It’s not a comprehensive list.
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
*waves at Wolfie* The videos are working fine for me!
(And what are you doing reading Mumbrella Wolfie? I didn’t know you worked in media / marketing!)
See you in SL!
Cheers

Four stories (comprehensive list or not) – I bet tourism Vic is stoked with that level of coverage!

RM,
Good to see you agree with catnmouse. It must be very harmonious for you both, what with sharing the same IP address and everything…
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
Yes Tim we share the same ideals here about what constitutes significant media coverage and what doesn’t. Cheers!

Excuse me? Stories in the Sun Herald and Telegraph aren’t significant media coverage? Bloody hell – you guys are picky. They’re only the highest readership publications in Australia, then you’ve got The Age on top of that.
I’d be far more than “stoked” if I was Tourism Australia.

Yep – works for me. The surfie and the finance ones in particular. But thats probably just the third person effect – I can least relate to them to they are most funny. Having said that, its a slightly negative overall idea – make it about kiwis and then its all good! One showing a kiwi waxing lyrical about how much more attractive their sheep are and how much more promiscuous. Maybe only on Gruen? I live in hope.
