Taronga appoints Nine group marketing director Karen Madden as marketing and comms lead

Taronga Conservation Society Australia has appointed a new director of marketing, communications and fundraising in Karen Madden.

Madden was most recently the group marketing director at Nine, leaving in March after two and a half years in the role. She has previously held senior marketing roles at News Corp Australia, Woolworths and Goodman Fielder.

Madden takes over from Libby Hodgson, who has become director of fundraising and communications at UNICEF Australia. Hodgson held the role for five years and spent eleven years total with Taronga.

Madden reflected on Taronga’s work during the 2019 bushfire crisis and the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m thrilled to join the passionate team at Taronga. In what has been a challenging year for all businesses, Taronga has strengthened its commitment to the conservation of wildlife both locally and around the world. This is in conjunction with the work Taronga has done during the recent devastating bushfire season to care for wildlife,” she said.

“The recent successful launch of the African Savannah at Taronga Sydney and the growth of Taronga TV further enables Taronga to deliver on its vision of creating a shared future for wildlife and people.”

Taronga CEO, Cameron Kerr, said Madden’s appointment was critical for the organisation.

“This appointment has come at a critical time for Taronga and we look forward to the wealth and depth of experience Karen can bring to this role, particularly as we navigate the complexities of managing a tourism-based business in the current environment,” Kerr said.
