The Australian appoints Leo Shanahan as media editor

The Australian’s media section finally has a permanent editor following the departure of Darren Davidson in September last year.

Leo Shanahan, who until recently was working on the now defunct Your Money news channel, will take up the role next month.

Shanahan commences in June

Shanahan was chief business reporter at Your Money, a role he began when the channel launched in October last year. Your Money was a joint venture between News Corp’s Australian News Channel, and Nine, however it ceased broadcasting this month with Australia’s two largest media companies saying the revenue model was not sustainable.

Shanahan will now remain within the News Corp family, taking on the role at The Australian vacated by Davidson.

Editor in chief of the paper Chris Dore said Shanahan brings a wealth of experience to the role.

“We are delighted to welcome Leo Shanahan, one of Australia’s most talented and respected business reporters, as The Australian’s new media editor.

“Leo is an award-winning business journalist who brings a wealth of experience in business and media to this role.”

The appointment is a return to The Australian for Shanahan, who previously worked at the paper as a journalist between 2011 and 2016.

He then took up a role as director of communications for CT Group before returning to News Corp as a business journalist in 2017.
