The Heat heats up the Aussie box office

the heatFox’s female buddy-cop movie The Heat starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy has topped the Australian box office in its opening weekend.

The film was shown on 336 screens and brought home a total of $3,880,355, narrowly beating Universal’s Despicable Me 2 which continued its box office clean-up taking $3,763,567 on 395 screens. It has now grossed a total of $29,739,610 beating the overall earnings of The Great Gatsby which remains in the top 10 and has taken a total of $26,223,866 at the local box office.

The other major film making its debut this weekend was Warner Bros blockbuster Pacific Rim which opened on a whopping 422 screens but took home just $3,000,480 resulting in a screen average of $7,110 compared to The Heat which had a screen average of $11,549.
