Tom Cruise’s American Made tops weekend box office

Tom Cruise’s latest film, American Made, kicked Annabelle:Creation off the top spot at the weekend box office, collecting $2.139m in its first weekend.

The Universal Pictures film, which premiered on August 24, is based on the true story of a pilot, who is unexpectedly recruited by the CIA, to run one of the biggest operations in US history.

According to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia, Annabelle:Creation, which placed second, earned $911,082 across 213 screens.

Last week the film grossed $1.526m and since its debut, the film has made $5.492m.

In third place was Dunkirk, which has collected more than $21.7m since its July debut.

Sony’s sci-fi thriller, The Dark Tower, fell from second to fourth over the weekend, collecting just over $500,000 across 269 screens.

While its first weekend at box office saw total earnings of $1.339m, its second week was less successful, bringing its total to $2.384m.

Eone’s Hampstead remained in fifth place, which made $500,972, over the weekend.

The film has made a total of $1.719m.
