Tupperware closes the lid on Australia, set to shut down operations

Prolific storage container brand, Tupperware, is ending its operations within Australia.

As reported by the Daily Mail on Monday, the company, which has been working locally since the early 1960s, will cease operating in Australia, with an expectation that a fair number of warehouse and sales employees will be made redundant before Christmas.

The news comes days after it was revealed that global rights to the brand’s related intellectual property, operations and name were purchased by Party Products – an organisation founded by the lenders. It also comes over one month after the famous brand officially filed for bankruptcy in September.

With Tupperware shutting down in Australia, the company is expected to follow through with its plans and prioritise operating within select markets in Asia and the Americas, including Malaysia, Korea, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, the United States and China.

Sales consultant at Tupperware, Maria, spoke to 2GB Breakfast Show host, Ben Fordham, on the development.

“We’ve been told the new owners that have purchased Tupperware global are not proceeding with Tupperware in Australia,” she said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“They’re only keeping eight countries open out of 70, and unfortunately, Australia is not one of them.”

According to Maria, while a definitive date for the brand’s Australian closure is not yet known, Tupperware employees have been informed that they will be compensated.

“We don’t know a final date for Australia yet. We’ve been told that we will be paid all our commission and what we are owed but that’s all we know thus far,” she said.
