UN pays tribute to accomplished Australian women to ’empower’ the nation

Successful mothers, daughters, godmothers and grandmothers are at the forefront of the UN Women National Committee Australia’s ‘Empower a Woman, Empower a Nation’ awareness campaign.

The campaign launches in line with International Women’s Day

Created by BMF, the campaign features young and old Australians sitting on a stool holding a photograph of a woman in their lives who they view as strong and empowering.

As each person holds their picture, text shows why each woman pictured is important.

The achievements include a daughter launching her own magazine when she was 19, a mother who let her daughter play soccer, a grandmother who never let a man speak over the top of her, and a godmother who is one of very few female cinematographers in Hollywood.

The campaign which coincides with International Women’s Day, also shows women across Asia Pacific and the aspirations they have for their future.

The campaign aims to raise awareness and funds to support the UN Women’s economic empowerment and leadership programs.

Janelle Weissman, executive director at UN Women National Committee Australia said it was “vitally important” to raise awareness to give women and girls the same opportunities as men across the globe.

“UN Women is currently developing, implementing and running programs across the globe to enhance women’s economic empowerment and leadership opportunities, to ensure that women and girls are equal participants in the community, the home, in business, in government and in the economy,” she said.

The campaign will run across online and social and will be the centre piece for the UN Women’s breakfast events this week.
