UnLtd’s Big Game gaming tournament raises $85K

The industry’s social purpose organisation, UnLtd, has raised a combined $85,000 for children and young people at risk through its Big Game gaming tournament.

The announcement:

Combining cutting edge graphics and high stake digital adrenaline, UnLtd’s Big Game tournament has once again exceeded expectations in its second year, raising a combined $85,000 for children and young people at risk.

Running over five weeks, the competition involved 32 teams from across the industry battling it out virtually for a chance to qualify for the Rocket League final.

The tournament culminated in a live finale event at the new Publicis Groupe office in Pyrmont last Friday where the final 8 teams – from ACM, ARN, GroupM, IPG, OMD, The Trade Desk and Twitch – joined the action in person and remotely from Brisbane, Melbourne, Bendigo and Tasmania. The day kicked off with four quarter-final games, whittling down the competition to the Final Four.

The semi-finals saw OMD take out GroupM Team 1 and IPG beat ACM, leading to an OMD vs IPG grand final.

In the end, Team OMD – consisting of team members Jacky Mo, Reece Luehman and Thomas McGlynn – clinched the trophy for the second year running. However, IPG still claimed some victory with Connor Dempsey named ‘player of the day’.

The event was once again sponsored by streaming pioneers Twitch and supported by Letsplay.live (LPL) who assisted with production of the tournament.

Ricky Chanana, Head of Sales AUNZ at Twitch, commented: “The Big Game really had all the elements of a classic eSports tournament – from the amount of buzz in the industry when it was announced through to the final nail biting moments of the final which kept us all on the edge of our seats. I would like to thank everyone who joined the action as players and supporters in person or live on Twitch on the day.

“Twitch is proud to be part of an event that supports programs for youth at risk, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with UnLtd this year beyond the Big Game event.”

UnLtd’s Head of Events Hannah McDougall added: “We were so excited to host a hybrid event for this year’s Big Game tournament – the first time we’ve done this at UnLtd. Not only were we able to connect different teams from all corners of Australia, but it was so exciting to see the level of dedication and passion from all those who participated.

“It was such a treat to meet our final eight teams and watch some seriously talented people battle it out for the trophy and come together in true UnLtd style, for a good cause.”

The participating teams in this year’s Big Game tournament included: ACM, Amazon, ARN, Carat, Domain, Facebook, Foxtel Media, GroupM, The Guardian, Half Dome, IPG, JCDecaux, Kantar, MiQ, Network Ten, Nine, OMD, oOh! Media, Pedestrian, PHD, PlaygroundXYZ, Play Media, QMS, REA, Seven West Media, Twitch, Val Morgan and Verizon Media.
