Vivid Ideas includes workshops on women and Youtube

Two half-day workshops have been added to the list for Vivid Ideas this year, one focussing on women and the other on Youtube.

The announcement:

Screen NSW and Screen Australia have partnered Vivid Ideas to present two un-missable events for screen industry professionals.

On May 29 Vivid Ideas presents LET’S TALK ABOUT THE F WORD: FEMALE STORYETLLERS. A panel of international and Australian guests, including celebrated UK screenwriter, author and story consultant Helen Jacey, former 20th Century Fox executive Susan Cartsonis, the Managing Director of Hopscotch Films Troy Lum, Australian directors Cate Shortland and Daina Reid and leading Australian producer Jan Chapman will discuss this hot button issue.

Women make up 50% of the population. The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of Australia) data revealed this year that 52% of the cinema audience is women, and yet, only 16% of Australian films are directed by women. In the USA, that number is even less at 9%.

Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg reckons women should stop holding themselves back and ‘lean in’; renowned Hollywood actress Geena Davis created her own research institute and movement to challenge underrepresentation of women in the media and entertainment; the international film festivals oscillate between ignoring female- directed films (Cannes 2012) to 50% of their program directed by women from females (Sundance 2013) – and all the while, the female protagonist is perceived to be under threat from conservative financiers and executives alike.

This half-day event will be held from 9am to 12 noon, 29 May at the Vivid Ideas Exchange, MCA Level 6, George St, The Rocks. Beginning with a lively panel event and Q&A, moderated by Megan Simpson Huberman, Director of Development and Production – Screen NSW, the morning will also include networking opportunities.

On June 3, Vivid Ideas presents a half-day session on understanding YouTube. This session, a partnership with Screen NSW, YouTube and Screen Australia, is a high level seminar on what every professional content creator should understand about using YouTube effectively to distribute, earn revenue, and leverage audience. The insider’s guide to everything you wanted to know about YouTube but were afraid to ask.

Panelists include Kristen Bowen, Manager Content Relationships, at YouTube Entertainment who will discuss a series of case studies where screen content creators have successfully used YouTube, plus Steve Crombie, Nick Murray, Nash Edgerton, Van Vuuren brothers, Natalie Tran, Derek Muller, Marty and MOOG from Mighty Car Mods.

As YouTube prepares to launch new changes and make more professional tools available to all channel owners, Kristen Bowen, Manager Content Relationships, will provide an insider’s view of the YouTube ecosystem, potential for partnerships, revenue, copyright management, customisation, trends, aggregation channels, YouTube’s Creator Hub, Playbook and other tools.

Kristen Bowen leads the development of content strategy and partnerships for YouTube in Australia and New Zealand. She has been with YouTube since 2007 and was one of the early employees in the San Bruno, California headquarters office. For the past 2 years Kristen managed partnerships with the UK television broadcasters at Google UK.

The YouTube VIVID IDEAS session will be from 9am to 1pm on June 3 at the Vivid Ideas Exchange, MCA Level 6, George St, The Rocks.

Both events are FREE but seats are limited. To register send an email with the session title in the subject line to rsvp@screen.nsw.gov.au
